Recent
Information
Because
government action and legislation have
such a great impact on the lives of
working people, it is essential that
Central Labor Councils have political
programs.
Through the COMMITTEE ON POLITICAL
EDUCATION (COPE), and with the help
locally of Labor
Clubs, the labor movement works to involve
union members and their families in the
democratic process, and to elect officials
at all levels of government sympathetic to
the needs of working people.
The Committee on Political Education
exists at the national, state and local
levels. The National AFL-CIO COPE
Department develops programs to carry out
the federation's political objectives and
works with State AFL-CIO's and Central
Labor Council's to implement the
programs. Central Labor Councils
have their own COPE structure to organize
and pursue political programs in their
jurisdictions. Fundamental
activities of COPE are endorsements of
candidates, voter registration, political
education, and get-out-the-vote.
Robert A.
Soutier, President and the members of the Executive Board
are COPE officers.
